S7 Students Compete in ESA’s CanSat Challenge

We are thrilled to announce that a team of six students from S7PHYEN has been selected to participate in the European Space Agency's (ESA) prestigious CanSat competition. The team will design and build a pollutant-monitoring satellite the size of a can, which will be launched from ESA's facilities in Belgium. Over 24 European countries are holding national competitions, and the winners will be invited to attend ESA’s ‘Space Engineer for a Day’ event at the ESA technical centre in the Netherlands in June 2025.

The mission of our satellite is to analyse the concentrations of air pollutants and greenhouse gases—such as methane, CO2, ozone, PM2.5, and PM10—that contribute to air pollution and climate change. The collected data will be categorised by altitude, temperature, pressure, and humidity, aiming to enhance our understanding of how natural factors influence gas and particulate concentrations. By identifying correlations, anomalies, and other patterns, this innovative project seeks to provide valuable insights into the causes and effects of these variations.

Our students are fully responsible for the planning, engineering, electronics, and programming of the satellite, as well as ensuring a safe landing post-launch.

This fantastic initiative also aligns with our school’s efforts to achieve the eco-label this year.
